Peking University is one of the earliest educational and research institutions in China to explore artificial intelligence. In 1985, Peking University established the Center for Information Science, which involved more than 10 departments across the university, including the Departments of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Radio Electronics. In 1988, Peking University established the first national key laboratory, the State Key Laboratory of Visual and Auditory Information Processing. In 2002, Peking University, relying on the Center for Information Science, founded the first Intelligent Science Department in China. In 2003, Peking University pioneered the establishment of the undergraduate program in Intelligent Science and Technology, which has been recognized as a national first-class undergraduate program. It has also been approved as a construction site for the national first-class undergraduate program and a doctoral degree program in Artificial Intelligence. In 2007, Peking University formed a complete education system offering bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in the field of artificial intelligence, which was among the earliest in China. In 2019, Peking University established the Institute for Artificial Intelligence as an independent entity directly under the university, serving as a major platform for coordinating relevant resources, developing world-class intelligent disciplines, supporting national strategic initiatives in artificial intelligence, and cultivating top-tier talent in the field. In 2021, Peking University established the School of Intelligent Science and Technology (SIST) as a milestone in the development of its intelligent disciplines. In 2022, the discipline of Intelligent Science and Technology became a newly added first-level discipline by the Ministry of Education.
In recent years, Peking University has successively established the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and launched the General Artificial Intelligence Experimental Class and the Intelligent Science and Technology Experimental Class. With the support of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence, Yuanpei College, and external affiliated institutions such as the Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence (BIGAI) and the Peking University Wuhan Institute for Artificial Intelligence, Peking University aims to cultivate internationally leading high-level, multidisciplinary talents in artificial intelligence who possess humanistic literacy, national consciousness, independent thinking, and interdisciplinary mindset, and who are proficient in core theories and technologies of artificial intelligence and are eager to explore new research paradigms. BIGAI, in particular, is guided by the mission of "pursuing the grand unified theory, creating a general intelligent entity, and enhancing the well-being of all humanity." It practices the strong nation strategy of "education, technology, and talent" and adheres to the research paradigm of "small data, big tasks." BIGAI conducts organized research efforts, aiming to achieve groundbreaking breakthroughs in the forefront of general artificial intelligence in terms of foundational theories, key algorithms, and innovative applications. It strives to promote original innovation and development in general artificial intelligence, and contribute to Beijing's goal of becoming an international center for scientific and technological innovation and a global hub for artificial intelligence innovation.
In response to the country's high attention to the development of artificial intelligence and to promote the healthy development of the new generation of artificial intelligence in China, there is a strong effort to construct the field of intelligent science, seize the initiative in global technological competition. Based on the discipline of intelligent science, the 4th "Peking University Intelligence" Youth Forum is jointly organized by SIST, Wangxuan Institute of Computer Technology, Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Peking University, BIGAI, and Wuhan Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Peking University.
This forum aims to facilitate in-depth academic exchanges on cutting-edge topics, share the latest achievements in the field of artificial intelligence and related interdisciplinary areas both domestically and internationally, and provide a high-level academic exchange platform for young talents from home and abroad. The forum covers various research directions in the field of artificial intelligence, including but not limited to computer vision, natural language processing, computational cognition and common-sense reasoning, machine learning, intelligent graphics and interaction, robotics, multi-agent systems, digital humanities, intelligent medicine, social computing, and more.
The 4th Peking University Intelligence Youth Forum is scheduled to be held online on April 20, 2023.
