Peking University is the birthplace of the intelligent science discipline. In 1985, Peking University established the Center for Information Science, with the Department of Mathematics, Department of Computer Science, and Department of Radio Electronics as its main components, highlighting interdisciplinary collaboration. With the support of the Center for Information Science, the first national key laboratory at Peking University, the State Key Laboratory of Visual and Auditory Information Processing, was established in 1988. In 2002, Peking University founded the first Intelligent Science Department in China. In 2003, it pioneered the undergraduate program in "Intelligent Science and Technology," which began admitting students in 2004. In 2007, Peking University successfully established master's and doctoral programs in the field of Intelligent Science and Technology, forming a complete talent training system encompassing bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees, which was one of the earliest in the field of artificial intelligence in China. In 2021, the School of Intelligent Science and Technology was established, integrating the strengths of the original Intelligent Science Department, Wangxuan Institute of Computer Science, and Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and incorporating "Intelligent Science and Technology" into Peking University's "Double First-Class" disciplinary construction. In 2022, Peking University and Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence were approved to jointly establish a national key laboratory for cross-media general artificial intelligence.

Looking back at the past, the school has made significant achievements in research areas such as computer vision, machine audition, and intelligent systems. It has undertaken and led multiple national-level major research projects, including National 973 Program, National 863 Program, and National Science and Technology Key Project, among others. The research results in fingerprint recognition, artificial cochlea, national space infrastructure, scene 3D reconstruction, and free viewpoint video generation have reached international advanced and leading levels.

Looking ahead, the school will focus on the construction of general artificial intelligence theory and systems as a long-term guide.
